GRANTS IN ACTION: Bruce Peninsula Hospice Inc.
Bruce Peninsula Hospice Inc. is a community-based organization made up of trained volunteers who provide support to individuals and their families coping with a progressive and life limiting illness. One of their most recent initiatives, the In-Home Hospice and Bereavement Service Promotion Project, was supported by Community Foundation Grey Bruce.
“We find many of our clients have family members who live at a distance, and we wish for them to have access to our informational material to better understand who is caring for their loved ones” says Nancy Forgrave, Manager of Volunteer Programs and Outreach at the Wiarton based organization.
In collaboration with the Tobermory Press, Bruce Peninsula Hospice Inc. created information packages designed for and accessible to individuals and their care givers. Bruce Peninsula Hospice Inc. anticipates over 1000 individuals will receive the In-Home or Bereavement packages and 200-300 individuals will receive the Welcome Client Package.
“By ensuring our services are understood and distinguished from others, such as government health care providers, we hope to strengthen our relationships with those for whom we provide care” adds Forgrave. Hospice volunteers carry out a variety of non-medical support services including:
- Companionship, listening, reading aloud
- Simple comfort measures, back-rubs, position changes, transfers
- Assistance with light housekeeping tasks
- Bedside vigilance while family members rest
- The opportunity for family caregivers to feel comfortable in taking some time away from home
